Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Gondoliers," one of the Victorian team's best-loved operas, was a flop in New York when it was first presented in 1889; undermined by frequent cast changes, it was derided by the local press as "The Gone-Dollars." Since then, however, it's become an American favorite. The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island will bring its 2019 production of "The Gondoliers" to Manhattan's Riverside Church on Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. "We don't get into Manhattan very often," company president Tamara Shyngle said, "so we view our Manhattan shows as calling cards, a chance to put our best foot forward with the city's large and very knowledgeable G&S community."
