The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island previewed its 2018 production of Gilbert & Sullivan's "Patience" for an invited audience at the East Meadow United Methodist Church this afternoon. The show previously has been seen only in principals-only format around Long Island, but was presented today with full company and chorus.
Re-envisioned by director Alexander Sheerin as set in a contemporary American coffeehouse a la Starbucks, the show retains the story and nearly all the original lyrics to Gilbert & Sullivan's Victorian-era classic. The audience was particularly entertained by the Aesthetic Maidens, reconceived as flamboyant hipsters and Goths, led by Terry Hochler as Angela and Patricia Gallagher as Saphir.
In the absence of music director Conrad Chu, pianist Thomas Z. Shepard filled in with flair.
