The title was "Sounds Like Country from Here: Songs by Tennessee Walt," and a small but enthusiastic audience clearly enjoyed themselves tonight at Don't Tell Mama, the legendary Manhattan cabaret.
In his first-ever performance consisting entirely of originals--except for an encore by Irving Berlin--Walt debuted a dozen songs he'd never performed before, while also performing favorites such as "Safe Between the Covers," "That's Just Some Guy," "The Wind Blows" and "Making the Same Mistakes (All Over Again)."
"It was a great night," Wren said. "I'm glad that there are so many people who like to hear me sing Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson, because those songs are immortal and mean the world to me, but there's something uniquely exciting about playing your own songs. If Williams, Rodgers, Cash and Kristofferson had never played anything but covers, I doubt we'd ever have heard of them today."
Walt was joined by guest artists Hobo Ken on "The Eclipse" and Texas Sally on "Short Time Here, a Long Time Gone."
